If you had your baby’s name picked out before getting pregnant, congratulations! Otherwise, picking a name for your baby can be a hard task. There are so many choices and picking a name is one of your first and many parenting decisions you will have to make for your child. There are a few considerations you want to make when choosing a name. I’ve also included a baby name list.

How To Pick A Name For Your Baby
Sometimes we may have experienced something in life where a name has special meaning attached. You may have had a loved one who passed away and you want to carry on their legacy by naming your baby after them. You could have also met a mentor or someone who changed your life in positive ways and wish to name your baby after this person.
Most of the time, when a woman first finds out she’s pregnant, she has no idea what to name her baby. Sometimes it’s a good idea to just wait and look for moments and experiences during the pregnancy. Did you visit a lake with your spouse and family for your annual summer vacation (Ex’s: Lake Victoria, Lake Edward, etc.)? Maybe you watched a movie and really liked one of the actors. Start paying closer attention to all of your experiences and ideas for baby names will start to come.
One common challenge I’ve seen is when partners can’t agree on a name. One way to get around this is to compromise. For example, perhaps one of you can choose the first name and the other one can choose the middle name. Also, if you decide on having more than one child, one of you can decide the name for this baby and your spouse/significant other can choose the name for the other baby.
Create a list of names
One of the challenges of choosing a baby name is that there are so many names to choose from. How can you possibly pick a name when the choices are endless? One of the things that will help is to write down a list of names that you think are good options for your child. Think of it as writing a “rough draft.” It’s not necessarily the end product, but you get started with the process and write your ideas down on paper. Over time, you can do a process of elimination until you find the right name for your baby.
I have a friend who named her daughter after her childhood best friend, because she was one of the nicest people she ever met. Think about different memories from childhood. Was there a friend or classmate who was nice or funny? Did you have a teacher that made a positive impact in your life? Other ideas include:
- The name of the park you always played at
- The street name you grew up on
- Your favorite childhood doll’s name
